All ladies absolutely smashed the session! With Fern, Nat and Tracy making the 75 pull ups look easy!

Saturday Sweatfest 

Bootcamp -9am

 Amazing atmosphere as always in our Saturday classes! We kicked things off with the increasingly popular Celtic Bootcamp, where along with our regulars it was lovely to welcome Mel Arlett back to the box, along with a first ever visit to Celtic Crossfit for Jo! Both wasted no time in fitting in and we hope to see you both more frequently in the near future! 

   
    
 Then came our Team, Saturday Sweatfest Class….

The pairs had a bit of a family theme today, with mum and son, Joe and Lorna along with farther and son Christian and Jack and brothers Alex and Lawrence all teaming up to tackle this mornings workout! 

   
 
The workout itself was great fun! With everyone surpassing their original expectations with regard to movement quality, weight used and final scores! Particular mentions go to Bryn for continuing to work hard in his overhead squat, meaning his movement now allows him to comfortably manage challenging weight on a high volume of reps during workouts. Lorna’s double unders also deserve high praise, she is now linking large chunks together consistently with great speed, despite husband Doffy trying to put her off with some tongue in cheek comments! (He is just a bit threatened by your progress Lorna, he knows you will soon be overtaking him in workouts). Finally it’s great seeing Dave and Tracy continuing their amazing journey back from injury and in many cases surpassing their pre injury quality of movement and strength!

Beach WOD 

“Beach WOD!!!!” Our GPP cycle continues, with our athletes getting comfortable in the uncomfortable! Not just using odd/ different implements within their training recently, but training in different environments, on different surfaces and at different times of day! Ensuring our Celtic Warriors are able to perform to their full potential whatever the situation! 
Today we took our Saturday SweatFest on the Road to “Coney Beach” for the second year in a row. It is not an easy feat to get a group of cross fitters to travel 40 miles lugging a load of equipment just to workout! But this epitomises the attitude of our community! Everyone was up for the challenge, everyone pulled together, carried equipment, offered lifts and despite a few hiccups with directions, everyone got there ready to train! 

  
  
It was also lovely to welcome back two of our favourite members to work out with us! Firstly, Kirsten, one of our earliest members who represented us in team competitions such as London Throwdown! who due to work and family commitments had to move away, but is obviously not lost her engine! Kirsten is an amazing runner and body weight ninja, so there is no surprised paired with the ever improving Shazza she smashed this workout! 

We also welcomed back Angharad, another life long Celtic Warrior, that was really starting to get into competing before she also had to move to pastures new, due to work commitments. It’s great to see that she has continued to work hard at her new box and is obviously reaping the rewards! She is stronger and fitter than ever! It was awesome to catch up with you both ladies! We all miss you loads!

Amazing determination and encouragement in the sun by everyone! Especially as the tide was going out, which meant the runs got further each round… 😰 (This of course was planned, reps decrease/ run increases 😏) 

   
    
    
   
Ross and Matty lead the way with the best time, but everyone did incredibly well! Erika and Maria smashed every run and their movement was superb throughout! I think Owen just pipped Iwan in the first father son battle, but Joe definitely smashed dad Doffy in their family competition! A final mention must go to Anna McNally, her enthusiasm and attitude is contagious, she even wanted to do an extra run once we had finished! “Crazy!”I hope everyone enjoyed getting out of the box and into a different environment for the day! 

   
 

#Canyoudothesplits?

Awesome effort from every one of our athletes this evening! First, we spent a lot of time refining our split jerk technique. With a focus on maximising power output by driving through the hips, ensuring the weight stays over midline and feet positioning in the catch. There were substantial improvements made by all athletes! In particular though, Katie Doff, Stewart and Bryn deserve a mention for efficiently generating force with full hip extension before getting under the bar and Richard Coates, Fern and Aimee worked incredibly hard on their split length and feet positioning which really helped them stabilise their landing position, when getting under the bar at speed.    
    
    
    
   
Next we did a little more work on our engines, with some 800m intervals. I know many of you were dreading this! Especially those with a real phobia of running! I won’t mention any names but I’m soooo proud of you all! for not just comfortably managing to finish all three runs, but actually hitting them hard, giving your all and finishing in amazing time! Matthew and Richard Coates also need a mention here for some unbelievable fast and consistent times! These guys saw hardly any drop off over the 3 runs! Which is amazing when you realise how fast they ran!! 

Finally there was a little time to get some extra conditioning in, with a short WOD. Kris Welsh and Tracy Davies took fastest times for the gentlemen and ladies respectively in this section of the class. Two competitors that have unrelenting levels of muscular endurance! Great evening everyone!!! 

   
    
 We also welcomed Alex, fresh out of on ramp last night to his first class today! And what a class to hit!! He did not look out of place and worked extremely hard! I hope we give the rest of our August on Rampers the same welcome when they hit classes next week! Great work Alex!!

Please remember tomorrow’s class will be held at Coney Beach Porthcawl. Either meet at the box at 9am and travel down in convoy or meet at the beach at 9:30am in the car park opposite the amusements.

After our amazing Deadlift Seminar yesterday, today was another action packed day at Celtic Crossfit. We kicked off with another busy dawn patrol (the light mornings are obviously suiting our athletes!). Followed by two groups of Newport Schools Under 15’s linking in with our new Celtic teens schedule as part of a six week strength and conditioning programme to prepare them for the upcoming season. 

 Then came our evening classes and with it huge improvements in snatch mechanics. Hannah and Liam leading the way with some improved movement from Tracy, Kelly Maidment ang great to see Kelly Aherne lifting well again following her Knee injury.

 We also said farewell (Again) to one of our longer serving members Jevon, who is leaving for work reasons again! We hope his job brings him back this way again soon. He will be sorely missed especially by the 7pm crew. Good luck and see you soon Jevs!

– Despite Saturdays Throwdown at Oblivion Crossfit, 9am Bootcamp and 10am class will run as normal.

Celtic 2.0 – The future… And how we have arrived here 

It’s Sunday evening… We’ve Just left Celtic 2.0 after another evening of planning and measurement taking! And we are Absolutely buzzing! This truly is going to be an amazing facility with countless opportunities for our athletes and the wider community of Newport to embrace health & fitness, strength & conditioning and of course Crossfit. It will also be, for us, the realisation of a Dream that we have been working towards over the last 5 years! Many of you won’t know this, but we were one of the first 6 Crossfit gyms open in Wales and one of the first 30 in the UK (There are now over 300).   
It was 2010 when we had the amazing idea of opening a business in a recession! alongside our already hectic day to day careers. Back then, there was not the opportunity to look for a loan or find a wealthy financier to throw money at the business and buy the latest equipment. We had to follow the “Crossfit business template” of growing organically from a true garage gym, expanding as our community and experience allow. We operated our first “Crossfit classes” from a secondary school gym in Newport. Open three nights a week for two hours at a time with just a few bars, bumper plates, some very old school skipping ropes, the schools climbing ropes, one or two kettle bells and a small group of dedicated members and close friends to kick us off on this amazing journey. 

   
    
   
Our legacy was built on an investment of £400 each and a lot of hard graft!! Our members were introduced to pull ups on a gymnastics beam (and you guys complain about some of the rigs you’ve been on!!) and our classes had the privilege of lugging this equipment from the gym to a storage cupboard in the school before and after every session!! 

   
    
 Despite our meagre beginnings our community started to grow, after much deliberation and worry, we took the plunge and moved into our first “Box” this was a tiny 1200 square foot industrial unit. Our small group of members helped us paint, lay flooring, move equipment and clean the place up! We could not have been prouder! 
   
    
    
 Not long after moving in to the Box we held out first Crossfit competition, again this was in a time where competitions were very few and far between. We hosted the competition in conjunction with one of our then members and Ex Welsh international rugby player Richard Parks, who had embarked upon his amazing 737 challenge! And all funds raised went to this cause. Most of the Crossfit boxes from Wales at the time were present and represented at our little facility! With current Crossfit seminar staff members and European Regional competitors Danny Watson (currently Crossfit 3D) and Andy Edwards (Owner of Dragon Crossfit) coming first and second respectively with Pete Rankin (Owner of The boatshed Crossfit facility and also European regional competitor) in third place! It was also an introduction to Crossfit competitions to the now extremely established Heavy Rep Gear boys, that sold T shirts and a younger, slightly less ripped Mike Catris owner of Kratos nutrition (& another European Regional competitor) that was also representing in his first ever Crossfit competition. 

   
    
    
   
Our athletes have had much success representing in many prestigious Crossfit competitions over the years. But the pinnacle must be, just missing out on team qualification to the European Regionals in Copenhagen by just one place in 2012. This was the start of our love affair with the Open, that has seen us introduce the Celtic Crossfit Affiliate Cup. A free “In house” team competition, that runs alongside the Open each year. This is always a massive buzz for our athletes and community and has encouraged many to enter into crossfit in a competitive capacity. 

   
    
    
    
    
    
    
    
    
   
As time progressed we understood that despite our extensive experience in teaching and coaching, to ensure the successful progression of our athletes we would need more than just a Crossfit Level 1 qualification. So we invested in and continued to build upon this and our Honours Degree’s in Sports science and post graduate teaching qualifications in Physical Education, by undertaking more Career Professional Development in an abundance of areas. These include Crossfit Olympic lifting, BWL Olympic lifting, Crossfit Powerlifting and Westside a Barbell powerlifting methods, Karl Paoli’s Freestyle connection movement and Crossfit Gymnastics, Crossfit Football (power and sport specific), Kelly Starrett (Mobility WOD and supple Leopard) Mobility seminar and Crossfit Kids are just some of the areas we have implemented into our ever expanding and evolving programming and experience.  

   
 As we grew as coaches, our community followed suit and we once again needed to expand! So with the help of our athletes, we knocked through the wall of our little Unit to next door and doubled the size of our facility yet again! Since being there much has changed, not just our experience as coaches, our programming, our opening hours, and our equipment all evolving. But we have helped create some fabulous athletes, including some Welsh and British Record holders. As proud as we are of this feat. We are just as proud of the fact that we can categorically confirm that we have made hundreds of people in and around the Newport area fitter and healthier in the process! It’s not just people’s physique and health we have impacted! Since opening we are proud that 4 of our ex members have gained the confidence and experience from us to fuel their own ambition, following in our footsteps to open their own Crossfit or Health and fitness facilities. 
   
    
    
    
    
    
    
   
We now embark upon our latest expansion, into a huge 6000 square ft facility that will cater for Celtic Crossfit Classes, Celtic Crossfit teens, Celtic Crossfit kids, Specific Olympic lifting (Celtic Barbell) and Celtic Power lifting programmes. Fully equipped with brand new equipment, an in Box nutrition and Apparel Shop and on site sports massage available. Once again we ask for the support of our community, to help us move in and make this facility the premier Crossfit and strength and conditioning facility in the Newport area. Thank you to those that have already given up time to come and visit the new box, there will be another opportunity more opportunities in the near future for anyone else interested in having a tour of YOUR new gym. There will also be a sign up board at the box, for anyone that has a skill or trade or contacts that can help us with the move or anyone willing to get involved? whether that be with some painting or even moving of equipment, any help will be much appreciated! 

   
    
    
    
    
 It has been a monumental struggle at times, but building this amazing community and seeing you flourish as athletes makes it all worthwhile! Many of you have been on this amazing journey since the start especially Members #1 & #2 Bridie and Geeves and we thank you for your continued support and friendship, It will be so rewarding to see you all evolving with us, as we move onto our next phase! Easter Fun
Our regular opening hours convened at the box today.. With catch up class, followed by Barbell and then, creating supple warriors, our Pilates class with Coach Tracy!
Today also saw one of our youngest Celtic Warriors, “Little Rob Wainwright” take part in his first Crossfit Teens Competition at Crossfit Caerphilly!
There were competitors from all over South Wales involved and Rob did us proud with some amazing performances! Hitting a 90kg Squat Clean & Jerk PB and finishing first in his heat in a couple of workouts! Hopefully he has learned a lot from this experience! And will come back stronger and more confident in his next… Of many, future competitions! Well done Rob! You did us all proud!
